The Boston Red Sox will play the middle game of their three-game series against the San Diego Padres this afternoon at Fenway Park. The Red Sox dropped last night’s game 9-2 behind a nine-run fifth inning from San Diego. The Friday night struggles continued for the Red Sox as they dropped to 3-11 on Fridays, they are 2-9 now in series openers that fall on a Friday and are 1-6 on Fridays at Fenway. They’ve been active the last few days making moves as they start to get key pieces back, today they added an arm as they claimed RHP Alex Speas from the Houston Astros. Speas was designated for assignment by the Astros last week.

Speas was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the second round of the 2016 draft. He’s pitched in the Rangers, White Sox, A’s, and Astros systems appearing in 127 games with 14 of those coming as starts going 13-14 with a 5.01 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, a 7.7 BB/9, and a 13.8 K/9 in 165.1 innings. He made his big league debut last season with Texas appearing in three games going 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA, a 3.50 WHIP, a 22.5 BB/9, and an 18.0 K/9 in two innings. This season he’s pitched for three teams in Triple-A making 21 appearances going 3-3 with a 10.38 ERA, a 2.62 WHIP, a 9.1 BB/9, and a 12.9 K/9 in 21.2 innings. He pitched for the Astros as well making one appearance going two innings giving up one run on two hits; he walked one and struck out two.
