Boston Red Sox Roster Moves 12/8

Red Sox Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Boston Red Sox have made a trade today. After trading away Alex Verdugo for pitching prospects earlier this week to the New York Yankees, they acquired Tyler O’Neill from the St. Louis Cardinals today. The Red Sox said they needed a right-handed bat and wanted to address that, and they have now done that. The Cardinals got RHP’s Nick Robertson and Victor Santos; Robertson was acquired from the Dodgeds for Kike Hernandez.

Tyler O’Neill By The Numbers

The Seattle Marines drafted O’Neill in the third round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Garibaldi SS high School in Canada. In exchange for Marco Gonzales, he was traded from the Mariners to the Cardinals on July 21, 2017. He debuted on April 19 against the Chicago Cubs, going 0-1 with a strikeout. That season, he played in 61 games, hitting nine home runs and driving in 23 runs while hitting .254. In 2023, he played in 72 games and slashed .231/.312/.403 with a .715 OPS; he had 55 doubles, nine home runs, 21 RBI, 27 runs scored, five stolen bases, and 28 walks. In his career, he has a slash line of .248/.318/.458 with a .776 OPS and a 112 OPS+; he has 67 doubles, three triples, 78 home runs, 217 RBI, 239 runs scored, 40 stolen bases, and 136 walks. Defensively, he has a career .976 fielding percentage and has won two Gold Gloves in 2020 and 2021; he also finished eighth in MVP Voting in 2021. He is eligible for free agency in 2025.

Wrap Up:

The Red Sox made their first move and will take them out of the running for Lourdes Gurriel, Teoscar Hernandez, and Michael A. Taylor. The next few weeks definitely be involved in the pitching market as they await the decision of Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
