Boston Red Sox Notes: Early Impresses, Sox Score Six in Fourth, Positive News on Two Key Pieces, and More

The Boston Red Sox fell to 22–31 after dropping their series opener to the Atlanta Braves. They’re 12.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League East. They’re four games back of the Twins for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

It was all zeroes for the first 3.5 innings, then the Red Sox attacked Bryce Elder, who had the fifth-best ERA in the National League. Marcelo Mayer drove in a run as he reached on an error. Isiah Kiner-Falefa stayed hot as he singled home a run. Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu then scored two runs each. They tacked on another run in the seventh as Marcelo Mayer singled home a run. Jarren Duran, in the eighth, hit a solo home run to make it 8-0 Red Sox. Connelly Early was impressive, going seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits, three walks, and striking out seven.

Key News & Notes

Tonight was the first time the Red Sox scored six runs or more in an inning since April 25th when they scored ten in the ninth of their 17-1 win over the Orioles. The Red Sox got good news regarding Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet. Anthony took a dozen or so swings, which is the most progress Boston has received since he sprained his wrist back on May 4th. He had tried to take swings last week but had to shut it down due to discomfort. Crochet on the other side three innings of live batting practice, which is the first time he’s faced hitters since it was announced he has left shoulder inflammation after his start on April 24th, which is why he’s been on the 15-day injured list.
