
The Boston Red Sox this morning have acquired right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals, according to reports; Jon Heyman had it first. The Red Sox traded Brandon Clarke and Richard Fitts to the Cardinals. Gray made 32 starts this past season, going 14-8. He had a 4.28 ERA, a 3.39 FIP, a 1.23 WHIP, and 201 strikeouts in 180.2 innings. The addition of Gray gives the Red Sox a starting rotation depth of Gray, Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello, Connelly Early, Payton Tolle, Kutter Crawford, and Patrick Sandoval. Gray waived his no-trade clause. The contract is currently being reworked to one year plus a mutual option. The 2026 salary will be $31 million, mutual option buyout of $10 million.

The Oakland Athletics drafted Gray 18th overall in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft. He spent five seasons with the A’s, making 114 appearances with 112 of those coming as starts, going 44-36. Gray posted a 3.42 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and 607 strikeouts in 705 innings. He was then traded to the Yankees, where he made 41 appearances, with 34 of those coming as starts, going 15-16. Gray had a 4.51 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP, and 182 strikeouts in 195.2 innings.
He then joined the Reds, where over three seasons he made 68 starts. He went 23-20 with a 3.49 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, and 432 strikeouts in 366.2 innings. Gray then became a Twin, making 56 starts over two seasons, going 16-13. He posted a 2.90 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, and 300 strikeouts in 303.2 innings. Finally, he joined the Cardinals, where in two seasons he made 60 starts, going 27-17. Gray had a 4.07 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, and 404 strikeouts in 347 innings.
