The Baltimore Orioles picked up a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins yesterday afternoon. They return tomorrow afternoon with Kyle Bradish on the mound. Today, during the off day, the Orioles signed right-handed pitcher Shane Baz to a five-year, $68 million contract extension. Baz has yet to throw a regular-season pitch with the Orioles, who acquired him from their division rival, the Tampa Bay Rays. The Orioles acquired Baz back in December as they sent four prospects and a Competitive Balance Round A pick to the Rays. Baz is set to make his Orioles debut on Sunday in the series finale against the Twins. Baz made three starts this spring, going 0-1. He posted a 2.61 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts in 10.1 innings.

Shane Baz
The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Baz 12th overall in the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft. The Pirates sent him to the Rays on August 14, 2018, to complete the trade that sent Tyler Glasnow and Austin Meadows to the Rays in exchange for Chris Archer. Baz made his big league debut on September 20, 2021, against the Toronto Blue Jays. He picked up his first big league win in that game, going five innings. Baz allowed two runs on two hits, all coming via home runs. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out five. He made 54 starts for the Rays, missing the 2023 season due to injury. Baz went 17-17 with a 4.25 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, and he had 293 strikeouts in 286 innings.
