Baltimore Orioles Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Baltimore Orioles will start a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight with Grayson Rodriguez taking the mound against Kevin Gausman. The Orioles come into play today three games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East and currently hold the top Wild Card spot. Before first pitch of tonight’s game, the Orioles announced an abundance of moves starting with shortstop Jorge Mateo being placed on the 7-day injured list with a concussion which led to them calling up the seventh-ranked prospect in the system by ITD second baseman Connor Norby from Triple-A Norfolk. The other move made by Baltimore today is that RHP Thyago Vieira was designated for assignment and LHP Nick Vespi was recalled from Norfolk.

Baltimore Orioles Roster Moves By The Numbers

SS – Jorge Mateo

Mateo left yesterday’s game and today has now been placed on the injured list with a concussion. He has played in 42 games hitting .246 with a .741 OPS; he had 12 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 13 RBI, 19 runs scored, ten stolen bases, and eight walks. He’s played four seasons for the Orioles playing in 340 games hitting .228 with a .655 OPS; he has 58 doubles, 11 triples, 25 home runs, 105 RBI, 149 runs scored, 82 stolen bases, and 287 walks.

2B – Connor Norby

Norby was drafted in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Orioles. He’s spent time across every level playing in 344 games hitting .283 with a .859 OPS; he has 86 doubles, nine triples, 62 home runs, 220 RBI, 258 runs scored, 39 stolen bases, and 161 walks. This season he is hitting .286 with a .884 OPS in 51 games; he has 17 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 36 RBI, 42 runs scored, seven stolen bases, and 27 walks at Norfolk.

RHP – Thyago Vieira

Vieira is a journeyman having played for four teams including the Orioles now. He started this season with the Brewers playing in 16 games with a 5.64 ERA, a 6.41 FIP, a 1.70 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts in 22.1 innings. With the Orioles he played in one game giving up three runs on one hit, he failed to register an out and walked four.

LHP – Nick Vespi

Vespi was drafted by the Orioles in the 18th round of the 2015 draft. He’s spent parts of the last three seasons with Baltimore on different stints appearing in 35 games going 6-0 with a 4.07 ERA, a 4.42 FIP, a 1.33 WHIP, and 37 strikeouts in 42 innings. He made an appearance earlier this season for the Orioles going one shutout inning and giving up one hit; he didn’t record a walk or a strikeout. At Norfolk, he’s appeared in 13 games going 2-1 with a 2.96 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts in 24.1 innings.
