The Atlanta Braves announced significant roster changes this week, as the team looks to adjust amid a tough stretch of the season. The Braves placed third baseman Austin Riley on the 10-day injured list due to an abdominal strain. The club also optioned outfielder Jarred Kelenic to Triple-A Gwinnett. To fill the roster spots, infielders Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Jonathan Ornelas received call-ups from Gwinnett.

Austin Riley’s Absence Could Impact Offense
Losing Austin Riley is a major blow. Through 102 games, Riley has slashed .260/.309/.428 with 16 home runs and 54 RBI. He ranks second on the team in total bases (178) and has been a consistent presence in the middle of the lineup. Without him, the Braves lose both power and leadership at the hot corner.
His abdominal injury surfaced after a game against the Reds, where he left the game after a diving play. While the team hopes Riley will return after the minimum IL stint, abdominal strains often linger, and the Braves will tread carefully.
Kelenic Struggles Lead to Demotion
Jarred Kelenic’s was called up the other day and in his lone game he appeared as a pinch runner. This season after starting the season with the Braves he hit .167 with a .531 OPS. He was optioned at the end of April for Alex Verdugo.
Alvarez Jr. and Ornelas Step In
Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Jonathan Ornelas will get opportunities to prove themselves at the major league level. Alvarez, a rising prospect, in eight games with the Braves hit .200 with a .483 OPS and defensive versatility. Ornelas, purchased from the Rangers earlier this season, has experience across the infield and brings speed and athleticism.
These moves indicate the Braves are focused on depth and flexibility as they try to maneuver through the remainder of the season.
Looking Ahead
