Atlanta Braves Roster Moves 7/2/2025

Atlanta Braves Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Atlanta Braves made two significant roster moves ahead of Wednesday’s game, signaling a shift in their outfield strategy. The club activated outfielder Jurickson Profar following his 80-game suspension and, in a corresponding move, designated veteran Alex Verdugo for assignment.

Jurickson Profar Returns After Lengthy Absence

Jurickson Profar officially rejoins the Braves’ active roster after completing an 80-game suspension related to a violation of MLB’s performance-enhancing substance policy. Prior to the suspension, Profar had signed a one-year deal with Atlanta and was expected to be a key contributor off the bench. Now, with the second half of the season approaching, the Braves are banking on Profar to deliver both versatility and a spark at the plate.

Before his suspension, Profar showed promise during spring training, flashing both defensive flexibility and situational hitting. His return provides Atlanta with another option in the corner outfield or even as a switch-hitting designated hitter. Given his experience and athleticism, Profar’s presence could prove valuable as the team navigates injuries and inconsistent performances.

Braves Cut Ties with Alex Verdugo

To make room for Profar, the Braves designated Alex Verdugo for assignment, a move that surprised some fans. Verdugo, acquired in the offseason, struggled to find consistency at the plate and never quite settled into his role with Atlanta. Despite early hopes that a change of scenery would reignite his offensive production, the results simply didn’t follow.

Over the first half of the season, Verdugo posted a below-average OPS and often looked outmatched against both left-handed and right-handed pitching. With Profar eligible to return and outfield depth already present, the Braves chose to part ways. Now, Verdugo will either be claimed by another club, traded, or, if he clears waivers, assigned outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Strategic Outlook Moving Forward

With the trade deadline nearing, these moves could mark the beginning of a broader roster reshuffle for Atlanta. Activating Profar strengthens the outfield mix and gives manager Brian Snitker more lineup flexibility. Meanwhile, moving on from Verdugo clears both a roster spot and potential salary space.

As the Braves aim to keep pace in the NL playoff picture, expect more roster tweaks in the coming weeks. For now, Profar’s return offers a fresh start, while Verdugo’s departure underscores the club’s focus on performance over reputation.
