A Boston Red Sox Prospect Named Player of the Week for 8/13-8/18

Last week, the Boston Red Sox minor league affiliates went 18-7 and outscored their opponents by a combined 110-83. Their Triple-A affiliate the Worcester Red Sox went 5-1 and outscored their opponent 23-16. Their Double-A affiliate the Portland Sea Dogs went 6-1 and outscored their opponent 41-22. High-A Greenville went 4-2 and outscored their opponent 17-16. Finally, the Single-A affiliate the Salem Red Sox split their series and both teams combined to score 29 runs each. The prospect who earned player of the week honors was RHP Blake Wehunt who was named Pitcher of the Week for the South Atlantic League playing for the Greenville Drive. He got the start on Friday going five shutout innings, he didn’t allow a hit either; he walked one and struck out six also picking up the win. This season through 18 starts he is 3-4 with a 3.68 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and 93 strikeouts in 78.1 innings.

RHP Blake Wehunt Career

Wehunt was drafted by the Red Sox in the ninth round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Kennesaw State University. In his first season in 2023, he played for the Red Sox rookie league team making one appearance, he didn’t record a decision going one inning giving up one hit, he didn’t allow a run; he didn’t issue a walk and struck out one. He has jumped around this season going from Single-A Salem and High-A Greenville. At Greenville, he’s made ten starts going 1-4 with a 4.80 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, a 2.2 BB/9, and a 9.8 K/9 in 45 innings. At Salem, he appeared in eight games going 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP, a 4.1 BB/9, and an 11.9 K/9 in 33.1 innings.
