Spring Breakout Recap: Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Philadelphia Phillies

The Pittsburgh Pirates top prospects took on the Philadelphia Phillies top prospects today in the Spring Breakout. The Pirates had two prospects in the Top 100 by ITD in RHP Bubba Chandler and second baseman Konnor Griffin. Chandler ranks 13th overall with Griffin ranking 52nd. The Phillies had three, outfielder Justin Crawford, infielder Aidan Miller, and catcher Eduaro Tait. Crawford ranks 66th, Miller in 32nd, and Tait is 94th. The Phillies picked up a 5-3 win.

Top 100 Prospects

Pittsburgh Pirates

RHP – Bubba Chandler

Chandler got the start for the Pirates going two shutout innings. He didn’t allow a baserunner and struck out four. He threw 30 pitches with 19 of them coming as strikes.

2B – Konnor Griffin

Griffin got the start in center field going 0-5 with a strikeout.

Philadelphia Phillies

INF – Aidan Miller

Miller got the start at shortstop and eventually shifted to third base. He went 0-4 at the plate with two strikeouts.

OF – Justin Crawford

Crawford led off for the Phillies playing center field. He went 2-4 with a triple and a run scored.

C – Eduardo Tait

Tait was behind the plate and he went 0-3 with a strikeout.

Other Prospects to Watch

Pittsburgh Pirates

LHP – Anthony Solometo

Solometo pitched 1.1 innings and struggled giving up two runs on three hits. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out three. He threw 34 pitches with 21 of those coming as strikes.

RHP – Hunter Barco

Barco would crank the Top 100 at some point this season. He went one inning giving up one run on one hit. Barco didn’t record a walk or a strikeout. He threw 23 pitches with 15 of those coming on strikes.

OF – Gabriel Rincones Jr.

Rincones Jr. went 1-4 with a run scored and a strikeout. He has fantastic power but struggles with swing and miss.

RHP – Griff McGarry

McGarry struggled as well failing to go a full inning giving up two runs on one hit; he walked one as well.

Scoring

The Phillies opened the scoring with a double by Devin Saltiban in the bottom of the third. They added on another run on the next batter when Aroon Escobar doubled home Saltiban to make it 2-0. The Pirates got on the board in the top of the fifth with a single by Tsung-Che Cheng that scored Mitch Jebb. The Phillies made it a two-run game again in the bottom of the fifth. Justin Crawford tripled and then later scored on a wild pitch by Hunter Barco to make it 3-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Pirates tied it back up with a fielder choice hit by Esmerlyn Valdez that scored Omar Alfonzo. Then with the bases loaded Axiel Plaz was hit by a pitch that brought home Jhonny Severino to make it 3-3. The Phillies took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh. Carson DeMartini led off the inning with a solo home run making it 4-3. The Phillies got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single from Alirio Ferrebus that scored Rincones.
