Seattle Mariners & Tampa Bay Rays Make A Deal

The Seattle Mariners have lost their division lead in the American League West due to a struggling offense but they have made an adjustment having struck a deal depending on where you live early this morning or late last evening with the Tampa Bay Rays as they have acquired outfielder Randy Arozarena in exchange for prospects outfielder Aidan Smith, RHP Brody Hopkins, and a player to be named later.

Trade By The Numbers

OF – Randy Arozarena

Arozarena has spent the last five seasons with the Rays playing in 568 games hitting .255 with a .786 OPS; he has 113 doubles, nine triples, 85 home runs, 289 RBI, 321 runs scored, 94 stolen bases, and 233 walks. This season in 100 games he’s hitting .211 with a .712 OPS; he has 19 doubles, 15 home runs, 37 RBI, 45 runs scored, 16 stolen bases, and 45 walks. He won Rookie of the Year in 2021 and was an All-Star in 2023. He will provide a boost the Mariners badly need.  

OF – Aidan Smith

Smith was a fourth-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft for the Mariners. Last season, he spent time in rookie ball, and with Single-A Modesto playing in 22 games hitting .208 with a .683 OPS; he had two doubles, three triples, one home run, eight RBI, 18 runs scored, six stolen bases, and ten walks. This season with Modesto in 77 games he’s hitting .284 with a .872 OPS; he has 26 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 42 RBI, 63 runs scored, 28 stolen bases, and 52 walks.

RHP – Brody Hopkins

Hopkins was drafted by the Mariners in the sixth round of the 2023 MLB Draft. This is his first season with the Mariners also playing at Single-A Modesto making 18 starts he is 4-3 with a 2.90 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, a 4.3 BB/9, and a 10.2 K/9 in 83.2 innings.
