Ahead of today’s series finale against the Guardians, the Padres announced they’ve extended 21-year-old outfielder Jackson Merrill. The deal is for nine years and is worth $135 million. He’s played in all six games for the Padres to start 2025, hitting .400 with a 1.035 OPS. Merrill has a double, a home run, six RBI, and four runs scored. The deal begins next season, keeping him in San Diego until 2034.

The San Diego Padres drafted Merrill 27th overall in the 2021 MLB draft. He debuted in the Padres system in 2021 and played in 31 games with their rookie ball team. Merrill hit .280 with a .722 OPS. He played in 200 games in the minors for the Padres, hitting .295 with a .802 OPS. Merrill had 45 doubles, ten triples, 21 home runs, 114 RBI, 133 runs scored, and 31 stolen bases. He started 2024 with the Padres, played in 156 games, and hit .292 with a .826 OPS. Merrill had 31 doubles, six triples, 25 home runs, 90 RBI, 77 runs scored, and 16 stolen bases. He was an All-Star, finished ninth in MVP voting, second in Rookie of the Year voting, and won a Silver Slugger.
