Reinforcements Coming for Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers despite having dropped two straight games are still 5.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot and are still in the hunt for a playoff spot, while the chances are still relatively slim, they still have a chance as FanGraphs currently has them at a 5.7% chance to make the playoffs. The one thing the Tigers have going for them is they have reinforcements who are either rehabbing or starting a rehab and will return with a winnable series coming up against the Oakland A’s and Colorado Rockies before they have a tough one against the Baltimore Orioles then it’s a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals who they are currently chasing, if the Tigers can get the deficit down to two or three games heading into that series then they could really do the unthinkable and sneak in the playoffs as well as ending their season with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago White Sox which are winnable series and could be beneficial to the Tigers.

So what reinforcements are coming? Starting with outfielder Wenceel Perez is already rehabbing at Triple-A Toledo, on top of that RHP Alex Faedo and RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long are both completing their rehabs daily, and RHP Reese Olson is going to pitch for Triple-A Toledo tonight. Finally, RHP Brendan White has resumed his throwing progression.

OF – Wenceel Perez

Perez is coming back from a left oblique strain and in his rehab stint he’s played in two games going 0-5 with a walk. This season for Detroit he’s played in 97 games hitting .242 with a .684 OPS; he has 13 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 32 RBI, 49 runs scored, nine stolen bases, and 27 walks.

RHP – Alex Faedo

Faedo is working his way back from a right shoulder strain. This season has appeared in 37 games with six of those coming as starts going 5-3 with a 3.61 ERA, a 4.93 FIP, a 1.34 WHIP, a 4.4 BB/9, and an 8.6 K/9 in 57.1 innings.

RHP – Sawyer Gipson-Long

Gipson-Long is dealing with a left hip labral repair and a right elbow strain. His only appearances this season came at Single-A Lakeland back on April 7th going three innings giving up one run on three hits; he didn’t issue a walk and struck out four.

RHP – Reese Olson

Olson is coming back from a right shoulder strain. This season he’s made 19 starts going 4-8 with a 3.23 ERA, a 3.15 FIP, a 1.18 WHIP, a 2.7 BB/9, and an 8.0 K/9 in 103 innings.

RHP – Brendan White

White has been out with a right radial nerve injury. This season he’s pitched in the minors pitching for the Tigers rookie team, Single-A Lakeland, Double-A Erie, and Triple-A Toledo making eight appearances with one of those coming as a start going 1-0 with a 7.36 ERA, a 1.91 WHIP, a 13.5 BB/9, and a 7.4 K/9 in 7.1 innings. He last pitched on June 18th.
