Hurston Waldrep was born in Cairo, Georgia, on March 1, 2002. He played high school baseball at Thomasville High School in Thomasville, GA. He was the 14th-ranked RHP and the 44th-ranked overall player in Georgia. At Thomasville, he finished 23-9 and won three 1-AA start titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Thorpe was ranked the 165th RHP in the country and the 489th overall player. He committed to play college baseball at the University of Southern Mississippi.

In 2023, he transferred to Florida, and for the Gators, he made 19 starts, going 10-3 with a 4.16 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 101.2 innings; the Gators made the College World Series he started game two going 2.1 innings giving up three earned runs on four hits; he walked six and struck out two in the Gators 24-4 win.
