Pittsburgh Pirates Season Opener: Nick Gonzalez Injured

The Pittsburgh Pirates lost their season opener in walk-off fashion yesterday against the Miami Marlins. Today, they added more bad news to the start of the season. They announced the placement of Nick Gonzalez on the ten-day injured list. He has an ankle injury. Today, the Pirates have an off day. They’ll take the field tomorrow for game two of the series with the Marlins. The team used Adam Frazier to replace Gonzalez late yesterday. Saturday’s game two will be an interesting one to see who takes Gonzalez’s spot in the field.

The Pirates have placed Nick Gonzalez on the ten-day injured list with a non-displaced left ankle fracture. In yesterday’s opening day match-up, Gonzalez hit a two-run home run. It gave the Pirates the lead at the time. However, while rounding the bases, it was very clear that he was in pain. Gonzalez was one for three yesterday with two RBI and struck out twice. The Pirates will now wait. They want to see how long they will be without the second baseman to start their season.

Emmanuel Valdez – 2B

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled Valdez from the Indianapolis Indians in Triple-A. Valdez will come up to give the Pirates options at second base. Valdez spent last year with the Boston Red Sox. He played in 76 games with 23 runs scored, 12 doubles, six home runs, 28 RBI, and a .214 batting average. The spring Valdez played in 14 games for the Pirates. He had three runs scored, five hits, one double, one home run, and four RBI. He finished the spring with a .227 batting average and a .847 OPS.
