New York Yankees Prospect Check-In: Week 2

The second week of spring training is in the books, and the Yankees’ depth gave fans more reasons to be excited as the team approaches opening day.

P-Clayton Beeter

Beeter had an impressive outing last Thursday against the Marlins, tossing three shutout innings while notching four strikeouts and walking only one. He ran into trouble after allowing three hits but was able to work out of it, stranding runners on base.

P-Will Warren

Will Warren looked very comfortable on the mound in yesterday’s game against Miami. He pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits and three strikeouts. Warren’s spring ERA moved to 3.86, but he looked comfortable on the mound and had good velocity on his fastball.

C-Austin Wells

This week was much more productive for Austin Wells. He played in three games and moved his stat line to .182/.250/.182. He had a pair of base hits, walked once, and scored one run while striking out twice. Wells’ plate appearances are becoming more competitive as the spring progresses, and he sees more playing time.

INF-Jorbit Vivas

Vivas continued to demonstrate his bat-to-ball skills this week but struggled with plate discipline. In 14 total at-bats, Vivas moved his slash line to .182/.357/.727 while collecting three runs, two hits, two home runs, four RBIs, three walks, and five strikeouts. The Yankees infield is already crowded, so Vivas needs to improve his consistency if he hopes to be valuable depth heading into the season.

INF-George Lombard Jr.

George Lombard Jr. had a quiet week with only two plate appearances. He struck out once and walked once, moving his spring batting average to .200 with one home run, two RBIs, and an OPS of 1.229. The club has been impressed with the young infielder and expects him to be a key piece in the Yankees’ future. Lombard Jr. is the youngest player in spring camp at only 18 years old, but he has shown the maturity level of a player much older.

OF-Everson Pereira

Pereira struggled at the plate this week despite a strong start. Against Toronto, he went two for three with two hits, two RBIs, one run scored, and one strikeout. Unfortunately, Pereira wouldn’t get another hit the rest of the week. In three total games, Pereira went two for nine with four strikeouts, moving his spring batting average to .188 with one home run, two RBIs, and a stolen base.

OF-Spencer Jones

Spencer Jones continued to be one of the most impressive players on the roster this spring. So far, he has had 13 at-bats, scored five runs, six hits, a home run, four RBIs, and two walks, and has only struck out three times. All this while carrying a slash line of .462/.563/1.255, so it is no wonder Yankee fans are excited about this young man. After the Yankees’ loss to the Mets today, Spencer Jones was reassigned to the minor league camp, but given his performance, Jones will be on the major league roster sooner rather than later.

The Week Ahead

The Yankees have no off days this week, and their schedule is:

Wednesday: vs Tampa Bay – 1:05 PM
Thursday: vs Detroit – 6:35 PM
Friday: @ Toronto – 1:07 PM
Saturday: @ Minnesota – 1:05 PM
Sunday: vs Atlanta – 1:05 PM

Tuesday: @ Toronto – 1:07 PM

Yankees Drop Game One in Familiar Fashion

The Yankees didn’t lose to Boston because of talent—they lost because of mistakes. Four errors, nine walks, and ten stranded runners turned a winnable game into a 6–3 defeat. Sloppy play has been the defining trait of their season, and it’s starting to bury their postseason hopes.
