New York Yankees Prospect Check-in: Week 1

Spring training is underway as prospects across the league vie for coveted roster spots. Up-and-comers in the Yankee organization are no different, each making a case for why they should be among the next generation of baby bombers. The Yankees kicked off their Grapefruit League schedule on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers a game they won in blowout fashion 22-10. On Sunday they have a split-squad game with half the roster losing to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 and the other half beating the Toronto Blue Jays 12-6. On Monday they beat the Minnesota Twins 9-2 before wrapping up their first week yesterday against the Tampa Bay Rays a game they lost 4-2. The Yankees after the first week of games currently sit at 3-2.

New York Yankees Top 10 Prospects Check-In

OF – Jasson Domínguez

Underwent Tommy John surgery in September and not playing for the Yankees in Tampa.

OF – Spencer Jones

Jones finished the week hitting .714 with a 1.921 OPS; he went 5-7 with a home run, four RBIs, four runs scored, and a walk through three games.

SS – Roderick Arias

Arias is not playing for the Yankees in Tampa.

RHP – Chase Hampton

Hampton made one appearance which came yesterday and he went an inning giving up one hit, one walk, and striking out two.

C – Austin Wells

Not exactly the start Wells hoped for. He went 0-5 with four strikeouts this week, but he’s looking very comfortable behind the plate.

OF – Everson Pereira

Another slow starter, Pereira’s first week ends with him hitting .143 with a .393 OPS; in three games he is 1-7 with a walk, a run, and a stolen bases.

INF – Jorbit Vivas

Through three games he is hitting .500 with a 2.714 OPS; he went 2-4 with two home runs, four RBI, three runs scored, and three walks.

RHP – Will Warren

Warren made his first appearance yesterday against the Rays going 2.2 innings giving up one run on four hits; he didn’t issue a walk and struck out three.

SS – George Lombard Jr.

Lombard Jr. is the youngest Yankee to take the field this spring and has made his presence known. He is hitting .333 with a 1.833 OPS; he is 1-3 with a home run, two RBI, one run scored, and a walk.

OF – Brando Mayea

Mayea is not playing for the Yankees in Tampa.

Week Ahead

The Yankees will have today off and they will return to Steinbrenner Field on Thursday to face the Miami Marlins. The Yankees will face the Toronto Blue Jays again on Friday, then on Saturday they will take on the Baltimore Orioles, and another matchup against the Detroit Tigers coming on Sunday. On Monday they will take on the Marlins before wrapping up week two against the New York Mets on Tuesday.
