The Minnesota Twins will play the third game of their four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays tonight. The Twins won the first game on Monday 5-4 but they dropped the second game 2-1 last night. In tonight’s game, they will have Ronny Henriquez making his first start of the season after making nine appearances out of the bullpen for Minnesota facing Cole Sulser for the Rays who is also making his first start of the season after making six appearances out of the bullpen. The Twins who currently hold a one-game lead for the second wild card spot and a 5.5-game lead over the first team out of the playoffs. Before the first pitch of tonight’s game, the Twins announced they had recalled Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul and in a corresponding move, they optioned Diego Castillo to St. Paul.
RHP – Louie Varland
Varland is in his third big league season with the Twins, in his career he’s made 30 appearances with 22 of those coming as starts going 5-10 with a 4.89 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, a 2.3 BB/9, and an 8.5 K/9 in 130.2 innings. This season he’s made eight appearances with seven of those coming as starts he is 0-5 with a 6.14 ERA, a 1.64 WHIP, a 2.7 BB/9, and a 7.9 K/9 in 36.2 innings. With St. Paul this season he’s made 17 appearances with 16 of those coming as starts going 5-8 with a 4.75 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP, a 3.5 BB/9, and a 10.4 K/9 in 83.1 innings.
RHP – Diego Castillo
Castillo is in his seventh big league season he’s made 264 career appearances with 17 of those coming as starts he is 24-18 with a 3.19 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, a 3.5 BB/9, and a 10.0 K/9 in 276.1 innings. With Minnesota this season he’s made six appearances posting a 2.25 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, a 7.9 BB/9, and a 4.5 K/9 in eight innings. At St. Paul this season he’s made 35 appearances going 0-4 with a 4.73 ERA, a 1.64 WHIP, a 5.8 BB/9, and a 10.6 K/9 in 32.1 innings.
