Miami Marlins Add Pitching Depth

Miami Marlins Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Miami Marlins yesterday added their shortstop for the 2024 season by signing Tim Anderson to a one-year deal. Today they followed that up by signing RHP Vladimir Gutierrez to a minor league deal with a non-roster invite to spring training. The Marlins expected 2024 rotation consists of Jesus Luzardo, Eury Perez, Braxton Garrett, Edward Cabrera, and Trevor Rogers; they will be without Sandy Alcantara for the season. Signing Guttierez gives them depth even if he is sent to Triple-A; in the system they already have prospect Max Meyer as well as Yonny Chirinos, pitching at Triple-A as well.

Guttierez was signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 2016. He made his big league debut on May 28, 2021, against the Chicago Cubs, going five innings and giving up one run on two hits; he walked two and struck out three and took the loss in a 1-0 game. He finished that season with the Reds making 22 starts going 9-6 with a 4.74 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, and 88 strikeouts in 114 innings; he also finished eighth in the Rookie of the Year voting. In 2022 he made ten appearances with eight of those coming as starts for the Reds going 1-6 with a 7.61 ERA, a 1.90 WHIP, and 29 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. In 2023 he pitched for the Reds rookie league team and Triple-A Louisville. He made five appearances with one of those coming as a start going 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP, and 29 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. At the highest level, Triple-A, he made five appearances, going 1-1 with an 8.31 ERA, a 1.61 WHIP, and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings. On October 26, 2023, he was granted free agency by the Reds.
