Is It Time for the Toronto Blue Jays to Rebuild

The offseason is in full swing and the Toronto Blue Jays have been linked to some big-name free agents such as Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, and Teoscar Hernandez among some other big names. Right now they are rumored to be in the final three for Alex Bregman with the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox, they are also linked to Jack Flaherty to add to their pitching rotation which includes Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, Bowden Francis, and Chris Bassitt, they are missing one arm to round that out with someone like Ricky Tiedemann, or Yariel Rodriguez, or Jake Bloss being an options assuming they don’t sign anyone. If Bregman doesn’t sign their lineup for 2025 if they don’t make any moves is currently expected to be

OF – George Springer
SS – Bo Bichette
1B – Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
DH – Will Wagner
C – Alejandro Kirk
2B – Andres Gimenez
3B – Ernie Clement
OF – Nathan Lukes
OF – Joey Loperfido

The issue now is big-name free agents aren’t signing in Toronto. They can’t come to an agreement with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. which reports today said that he wants to sign in Boston once he’s a free agent if they can’t come to an agreement by Spring Training, also reports said Bo Bichette is as good as gone following this season. So should they consider blowing things up and rebuilding?

What A Rebuild Could Look Like

The Blue Jays made the playoffs in 2022 and 2023 but didn’t make it out of the American League Wild Card round, they haven’t made a deep playoff run since 2016. They had the core in Guerrero Jr, and Bichette but haven’t been able to do much with them and are wasting their prime. The Blue Jays could look to move both and get a haul back and start the rebuild but the haul they’d get back would expedite the rebuild at the same time with some talented prospects. At the trade deadline last season, they moved on from Yusei Kikuchi and got some nice prospects in return as they got Bloss, Loperfido, and Wagner who all could make an impact for Toronto in 2025 imagine moving the two big-name players on their roster what they’d get back in return.

The System

The Blue Jays currently have one of the worst systems in all of baseball with only one prospect in the Top 100 in Trey Yesavage who they drafted with the 20th overall pick in this past draft. Last season, they entered the season with two in the Top 100 in Tiedemann and Orelvis Martinez, so with what they currently have on the roster it doesn’t appear like much is coming for them unlike teams they have to deal with in the division such as the Boston Red Sox who have a top farm system even after trading Kyle Teel with three prospects in the Top 10 in Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer, and Roman Anthony another team in their division has two players in the Top 15 in the Baltimore Orioles who have Coby Mayo and Samuel Basallo. If the Blue Jays are to compete they need to develop a better farm system.

Final Thoughts

What would you do, I know as a fan it’s tough to think of the idea of a rebuild and moving on from your two superstars but if you were to do it, it would have a lasting impact on the potential future of the franchise and could even make them a force in a few season to compete with the top teams in the American League East as well as the American League which entering 2025 is wide open and could be anyone’s to have.
