Second-Inning Swing Sets the Tone

Chicago struck first in the top of the second inning, capitalizing on an early scoring opportunity. Nico Hoerner delivered a two-run single that brought home Michael Busch and Dansby Swanson, giving the Cubs a 2-0 lead. The advantage didn’t last long. Tampa Bay answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Cedric Mullins launched a two-run homer to right field. This tied the game and shifted momentum back to the Rays. Yandy Diaz added an RBI single to give the Rays a 3-2 lead.

Caminero Provides the Go-Ahead Spark

Both starting pitchers, Jameson Taillon and Shane McClanahan, worked into the middle innings. The game remained tight before Tampa Bay broke through. Junior Caminero delivered the decisive blow with a go-ahead solo home run. This action gave the Rays their first lead of the game. The swing proved to be the difference-maker as Chicago’s offense struggled to regain its early rhythm.

Rays Add Insurance, Cubs Can’t Close Gap

Tampa Bay continued to apply pressure offensively. Yandy Díaz contributed with an RBI single. This hit helped extend the lead. Jonathan Aranda added key late power to put the game out of reach.

Chicago managed to scratch across another run on a sacrifice fly by Michael Busch. However, the comeback effort stalled. The Rays’ pitching held firm down the stretch.

Player of the Game

Jonathan Aranda earns Player of the Game honors. His two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh proved to be more than just insurance runs. It made the score 6-3 at the time. This was crucial because the Cubs’ Matt Shaw hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth. This brought the Cubs within two.

Quick Takeaway

Tampa Bay’s ability to respond immediately and capitalize on power hitting proved decisive after falling behind early—what do you think?

For the Cubs, yet again, the inability to limit runs in the later part of the game hurts. The bullpen gives up runs late.
