Tigers vs. Twins

First Three

The first two innings were silent, but Minnesota got the scoring started in the home half of the third. Byron Buxton led off with a double, followed by a Trevor Larnach single. Luke Keaschall walked to load the bases. The Tigers got a quick out, then Victor Carantini drove home Buxton on a sacrifice fly. Matt Wallner then singled home Larnach, and Royce Lewis singled home Keaschall to make it 3-0 Twins.

Middle Three

The Tigers evened things up in the top of the fourth. Rookie sensation Kevin McGonigle reached on a fielding error by Brooks Lee. He then stole second, followed by a Gleyber Torres walk. Colt Keith would double home McGonigle to make it 3-1. A few batters later, after a pop out and a Spencer Torkelson walk to load the bases, Zach McKinstry singled home Keith and Torres to tie it at 3-3. The tie was short-lived as Minnesota took the lead back. Larnach hit a two-out single, then Keaschall hit a two-run home run, his first big fly of the season, to make it 5-3. That score held up through six innings.

Last Three

The Twins had a one-out double in the seventh by Wallner, but Drew Anderson struck out the next two hitters to end the threat. Detroit had a great chance at the top of the eighth after three straight walks; however, in between there, a base-running blunder occurred before the third walk. The ball went to the backstop but ricocheted back to the catcher, and Riley Greene returned to second, but Spencer Torkelson was caught in no man’s land and tagged out. So the third walk made it first and second, but the Twins got out of the jam. The Twins added to their lead in the eighth. After three straight one-out walks, Carantini singled home two runs to make it 7-3 Twins. The Tigers went down 1-2-3 in the ninth as the Twins took the first game 7-3.

Player of the Game:
