The Detroit Tigers will play a doubleheader today against the Colorado Rockies to wrap up their series. Detroit won game one of the series last night. The Tigers will have Casey Mize on the mound for game one. Mize will face off against Kyle Freeland for Colorado. In game two, the Tigers are either going with an opener or Keider Montero, who they are calling up from Triple-A Toledo to be the 27th man on the roster. The Rockies haven’t announced their starter yet for game two. Montero has made three starts for the Tigers this season. He is 0-1 with a 5.93 ERA, a 1.76 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts in 13.2 innings. In three starts at Toledo, he is 1-2. Montero has a 4.91 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, and 16 strikeouts in 14.2 innings. Before last night’s game, they also released Kenta Maeda, and Manuel Margot was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

Keider Montero

Montero made his big-league debut last season, making 19 appearances with 16 of those coming as starts, going 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts in 98.1 innings. He appeared in two games in the playoffs last season, posting a 0.00 ERA, a 0.33 WHIP, and three strikeouts in three innings. In 13 games with Toledo last season, he went 1-4 with a 5.03 ERA, a 1.70 WHIP, and 54 strikeouts in 48.1 innings. In 122 career games, 109 of those came as starts in his tenure within the Tigers organization. He is 35-35 with a 4.21 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP, and 520 strikeouts in 496.1 innings.

Kenta Maeda

Maeda posted a 7.88 ERA, a 1.88 WHIP, and eight strikeouts in eight innings this season. His Tigers tenure has been a rough go. He was a starter in 2024 before being demoted to the bullpen. In 29 appearances with 17 of those coming as starts last season, he went 3-7 with a 6.09 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 112.1 innings. He also made one start at Triple-A Toledo, going three innings, giving up one run on three hits. He didn’t issue any walks and struck out six.

Manuel Margot

Margot was signed this offseason to fill a hole in the outfield, but Javier Baez has taken that over, making Margot the option to be sent down. In six games, he hit .316 with a .616 OPS. He had three RBI and a run scored.
