Detroit Tigers Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Detroit Tigers have been active this offseason, having signed Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty to bolster their starting rotation. Today, they added another arm as they signed Shelby Miller to a one-year deal with an option pending his physical. He is getting his physical today in Detroit, so the contract should be official soon.

Shelby Miller By The Numbers

Miller was drafted 19th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2009. Over his career, he has played for the Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Initially, he started as a pitcher in 2013, finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting. Then, in 2015, he was named an All-Star. Following 2020, he became a reliever, although he did make one start for the Dodgers last season. In 2013, he turned in his best season as a starter with the Cardinals, going 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA, a 3.67 FIP, a 1.20 WHIP, and 169 strikeouts in 173.1 innings of work. Last season with the Dodgers, he went 3-0 in 36 games, finishing with a 3.68 FIP, a 0.90 WHIP, and 42 strikeouts in 42 innings of work. For his 11-year career, he is 41-58 with a 4.08 ERA, a 4.16 FIP, a 1.34 WHIP, a 1.3 HR/9, a 3.6 BB/9, and a 7.5 K/9. In the postseason, he has made six appearances in his career; he has not gotten a decision but posts a 4.60 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, and 15 strikeouts in 15.2 innings of work. He will be a nice piece to add to the Tigers bullpen and could contribute a spot start if needed throughout the season.
