The Detroit Tigers pulled off a come-from-behind win last night over the Kansas City Royals as they keep climbing toward a potential playoff spot now sitting just 1.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the final playoff spot. Last night, the Tigers fell behind early to the Royals as they allowed four runs in the bottom of the third. In the top half of the fourth, the Tigers got a run back as Trey Sweeney drove home Zach McKinstry on a sacrifice fly, the Royals would extend their lead back to four in the bottom half of the fourth. In the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers inched closer as Matt Vierling drove home Parker Meadows on a single, then Colt Keith drove Vierling home with a two-run home run to make it 5-4 Royals; Kansas City would tack on another run in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers took the lead in the top of the sixth as Wenceel Perez hit a two-run double to score Andy Ibanez and Jake Rogers to tie the game at 6-6 then Vierling drove home Perez to give Detroit the lead. Kansas City would have threats in the seventh and eighth innings, but Will Vest and Beau Brieske pitched out of jams as the Tigers secured the win.
One name aside from Tarik Skubal has been a big part of the Tigers’ success as they look to keep climbing and that’s another pitcher in RHP Keider Montero who was awarded for his success over the last week as he was named the American League’s Player of the Week. Montero made two starts going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, a 0.64 WHIP, and six strikeouts in 14 innings; he also had a complete game shutout against the Colorado Rockies, and the second start against the Baltimore Orioles was five shutout innings.
