Detroit Tigers Could Lose Prospects in the Rule 5 Draft

Tigers Rule 5 Draft

MLB teams have until Tuesday at 6:00 PM to set their 40-man roster with the eligible players for the rule five draft. If the player was first signed at the age of 18 or younger must be added to the 40-man roster within five seasons, or else, they are eligible; if a player signed at 19 or older has to be protected with four seasons or else they are eligible. The rule five draft will take place on December 7th in Nashville. A loophole is if a player is selected, they have to be on the 26-man roster of that team for the full season; if they aren’t, they are offered back to his original team.

The Tigers have four prospects eligible

(System Rankings)

  • RHP Wilmer Flores (7)
  • C Dillon Dingler (11)
  • OF Roberto Campos (22)
  • RHP Keider Montero (26) – Added to the 40-man roster on Tuesday.

This season, across three levels, he slashed .256/.361/.478 with a .839 OPS; he had 22 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs, 58 RBI, 58 runs scored, six stolen bases, and 42 walks.

Roberto Campos

Keider Montero

Montero was added to the 40-man roster on Tuesday, but throughout his Tigers career, he’s played across six levels, making it as high as Triple-A in 2023. During his career, he is 33-29 with a 4.09 ERA, a 1.40 WHIP, a 0.8 BB/9, a 3.4 BB/9, and a 9.3 K/9. In 2023, he went 15-4 across three levels, with a 4.66 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP, a 1.1 HR/9, a 3.5 BB/9, and an 11.3 K/9.

Wrap Up:

The Tigers have taken OF Akil Baddoo, RHP Rony Garcia, OF Victor Reyes, and SS Deivi Cruz in the Rule Five draft. They lost RHP Will Vest, but he returned. There are some names on the list that the Tigers should keep, starting with Flores and Dingler. Dingler had been commented on about his way of calling a game from some pitchers last season so he could be a prominent catcher for the Tigers in the future. Flores should also stay, as he can provide for Detroit as a starter or a bullpen arm. It will be interesting to see what the Tigers do by Tuesday night and who they decide to make available for the Rule 5 Draft.
