Between last evening and today, the Reds have been very busy making two trades and several roster moves, as they fill out their roster amongst all these moving pieces. The Reds did secure a victory last evening over the Chicago Cubs but still are in sell mode as it appears. While they are out of the playoff picture currently they do seem to be working on building towards next season rather than a complete rebuild, which given their injuries this year makes the most sense. Moving Montas who was on the roster with a one-year deal made sense especially given how he has performed so far this year. As the Trade deadline closes, I would not expect much more from the Reds as they head into game two of their series against the Cubs.
Trade with Brewers:
RHP – Frankie Montas
The Reds traded Montas to the Milwaukee Brewers last night in exchange for RHP Jakob Junis, OF Joey Wiemer, and Cash. Montas was on a one-year deal and was a viable trade option for the Reds now that they are out of playoff contention and more than likely not bringing Montas back next year. Montas has a 4-8 record in 19 games started for the Reds and has a 5.01 ERA. He pitched in 93.1 innings for the Reds striking out 78 batters while allowing a 1.44 WHIP so far this year. The Brewers needed to add an arm as they attempted to fight off the Pirates and Cardinals in the National League Central division. In return, they received 25-year-old Outfielder Joey Wiemer who has played in 19 games this year for the Brewers and slashed .154/.185/.154 with a .339 OPS on the year. The Reds also received Jakob Junis in the deal who is a RHP who can start or be used out of the bullpen. He has only made one start this year but has pitched in relief nine times for the Brewers. He has worked in 26 innings allowing seven earned runs, five walks, struck out 19, and has a 2.42 ERA this year. The Reds also will be receiving cash in this deal which has yet to be announced how much.
Trade with the Red Sox
RHP – Lucas Sims
Sims has been traded to the Boston Red Sox for RHP Ovis Portes. The Reds have traded relief pitcher Lucas Sims to the Red Sox today. Sims has appeared in 43 games this year with one win and four losses on the year. He has pitched 35.1 innings allowing 14 earned runs, 20 walks, struck out 40, and has a 3.57 ERA on the year for the Reds. In return, the Reds have received RHP Ovis Portes who most recently was pitching in Single-A for Salem. He has made five starts and appeared in two others. He has pitched 21 innings in Single-A allowing 11 earned runs, and 15 walks, struck out 25, and has an ERA of 3.43 so far this year.
Reds Roster Moves
C – Lucas Maile
The Reds have sent Maile on a rehab assignment with the Louisville Bats in Triple-A. He has played in 39 games this year with eight runs scored, three doubles, two home runs, eight RBIs, 10 walks, and 39 strikeouts. He has slashed .176/.274/.265 with a .539 OPS this season.
SS – Livan Soto
The Reds have designated Soto for assignment today. Soto has only played in one game for the Reds so far and had three at-bats with just one strikeout to speak of with his time with the big league club.
RHP – Yosver Zulueta
The Reds have recalled Zulueta from Triple-A Louisville Bats. He has pitched in three games this year with the Reds without factoring in a decision over his five innings pitched. He has allowed two hits, one earned run, two walks, and struck out four. He has a 1.80 ERA and WHIP of 0.80 in those three games.
RHP – Lyon Richardson
The Reds have recalled Richardson from Triple-A Louisville Bats. Has pitched in 20 games with 19 starts for the Louisville Bats. He has pitched in 88.1 innings allowing 44 earned runs, 54 walks, 82 strikeouts, and has an ERA of 4.48 while in Triple-A.
Overview
2025 will be a better year for Reds fans, as long as all our bats can stay healthy and not get suspended. The future is still bright with many young prospects on the way. This team just needs another year until the excitement can be brought back to Cincinnati in October!
