Cardinals Option Thomas Saggese and Others to Triple-A

The St. Louis Cardinals continue to cut down their roster with opening day 11 days away. Today’s moves were highlighted by the team optioning Thomas Saggese down to the Memphis Redbirds in Triple-A. The Cardinals lost their spring training game against the Miami Marlins today 11-5. They look to finish the spring strong before heading to St. Louis to kick their season off against the Minnesota Twins.

Thomas Saggese – 2B

The St. Louis Cardinals optioned Thomas Saggese to Triple-A today to start his year with the Memphis Redbirds. Saggese had 30 at-bats five runs scored, eight hits, one home run, two RBIs, and a batting average of .267 this spring. Last season while with the Cardinals, Saggese played in 18 games. He had two doubles and one home run. He also recorded four RBIs and five runs scored. Saggese had a .204 batting average and a slash line of .250/.306/.556 on the year.

Matt Koperniak – LF

Matt Koperniak was also optioned to Triple-A by the Cardinals today. Koperniak had an impressive spring with a .355 average over 31 at-bats. He added two home runs, six RBIs, and one stolen base this spring. Koperniak aims to stay hot in Triple-A with the Memphis Redbirds. He has his eyes set on a future call-up to the big league club.

Michael Helman – CF

Michael Helman will start his year with the Memphis Redbirds after being optioned by the Cardinals today. Helman, unlike Koperniak, stuggled this spring. He had a .111 batting average while chipping in four RBIs and only two hits in 18 at-bats. Helman was acquired from the Minnesota Twins this winter for cash considerations. He will start his first year with the Cardinals in Memphis.
