Boston Red Sox Stars in the Minors

Over the weekend, the Boston Red Sox took two of three from the New York Mets. However, The big news for the Red Sox over the weekend is that some of their former players returned and started their rehab assignments. Over the weekend, Trevor Story, Pablo Reyes, and Corey Kluber all played for the Red Sox AA affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs. The Red Sox top two prospects also had good weeks, with Cedanne Rafaela playing with the Red Sox AAA affiliate, the Worcester Red Sox, and Marcelo Mayer playing with the Sea Dogs.

Worcester Red Sox

Worcester played a series against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the New York Yankees AAA affiliate. The Red Sox AAA affiliate split the series winning their three games on Wednesday and Thursday and the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday. The Red Sox #2 prospect Ceddanne Rafaela, would play in five games, going 9-23 with four runs scored, three doubles, two home runs, and ten RBI against the RailRiders. This season he has spent time with AA Portland AAA Worcester. He posts a slash line of .297/.337/.492 and a .830 OPS between the two; his slash line with Worcester is .305/.352/.646 and a .999 OPS. With the trade deadline coming up when all is said and done, Rafaela maybe with the Red Sox before the end of the season.

Portland Sea Dogs

The Portland Sea Dogs took on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats this past weekend and took four games out of the six they played. They won Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday (completion of Friday’s game), and Sunday in game two of their doubleheader; Friday’s game would get pushed to Saturday due to weather. The big thing from the weekend for Portland was Trevor Story returned this weekend rehabbing in AA, and he played five innings at shortstop on Friday and Sunday. On Saturday, he would be the Designated Hitter. Story went 2-8 with two runs scored, a home run, and three RBI. With Story down there, the Sea Dogs shifted the Red Sox top prospect a bit, with him playing third base on Friday, then going back to shortstop when Story exited. In the second game on Saturday, he played the whole game at shortstop, but Mayer didn’t play on Sunday. The SeaDogs no-hit the Fisher Cats on Sunday even though they gave up two runs which came on walks as they combined to walk seven. Pablo Reyes is also rehabbing in Portland, and in four games this past week, he went 3-16 with three runs scored, a double, four walks, and three stolen bases. Corey Kluber is also rehabbing in Portland, and he pitched Friday, going two innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one.

Wrap-Up

The Boston Red Sox are in the process of getting back critical pieces at the right time with Story rehabbing, and Reese McGuire is set to rehab tomorrow. They also got good news as Chris Sale threw the other day, and Garrett Whitlock is playing catch; they are also closing in on Tanner Houck getting ready to start working out again. The trade deadline is in eight days, and the next few games could be interesting for what the Red Sox do next, especially with some essential pieces working their way back into the mix.
