The 2024 season is slowly slipping away from the Boston Red Sox as they can’t seem to muster up any wins or runs as they dropped their fifth straight game last night and fourth straight series. They will head into this weekend facing the Chicago White Sox still sitting 5.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot behind the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals who just so happen to play each other this weekend for three games. The Red Sox own the tiebreaker over the Royals having won four of the six games head to head, as for the Twins the Red Sox will face them in two weeks for a three-game series and need to sweep to take the tiebreaker if they take two of three they’ll split the season series, now a sweep could also mean they could pass the Twins when he time comes depending on the standings but that’s hard to think about right now with the way things have been going and currently being tied with the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners right now entering play today. Maybe, just maybe it’s time for a new approach and look at the young names currently in Triple-A, maybe calling up Richard Fitts and Quinn Priester to get a look at two of your young arms and then adding Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Kyle Teel to add to your lineup; they will also be getting back Trevor Story most likely this weekend. Let’s look at what the five have done at Triple-A to this point and what they could likely add.
RHP – Richard Fitts
Fitts this season is 9-5 in 24 appearances with 23 of those coming as starts with a 4.17 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP, and 111 strikeouts in 116.2 innings. He pitched on Monday for Worcester picking up a win going six shutout innings giving up just two hits; he didn’t issue a walk and struck out five. He finished August going 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts in 28 innings; he never allowed more than three runs in a start last month.
RHP – Quinn Priester
Priester was acquired at the trade deadline and since coming over has made six starts going 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts in 26 innings. He pitched last night picking up the win going six shutout innings giving up four hits; he didn’t issue a walk and struck out eight; it was his best start since joining the Red Sox organization.
OF – Roman Anthony
Anthony one of the Red Sox’s top prospects has been red hot since getting to Worcester, in 19 games he’s hitting .329 with a .957 OPS; he has six doubles, one triple, three home runs, 12 RBI, 17 runs scored, 11 walks, and one stolen base. Entering the offseason the Red Sox will have to address their crowded outfield, but Anthony is a part of the long-term plans, and the way he is hitting he could provide a spark for a Red Sox lineup that badly needs it.
INF – Kristian Campbell
Campbell has become a must-see as he has shot right up the system in 2024 and that’s continued at Worcester in 12 games, he’s hitting .298 with a .953 OPS; he has two doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI, 14 runs scored, nine walks, and three stolen bases. With David Hamilton out Campbell could be a great piece to have at second base for the time being.
C – Kyle Teel
Teel has struggled to get going in 16 games he’s hitting .175 with a .502 OPS; he has a double, a home run, ten RBI, nine runs scored, eight walks, and two stolen bases. He has however seemed to figure it out in his last three games going 5-12 with a home run, four RBI, two runs scored, two walks, and two stolen bases.
SS – Trevor Story
Story is way ahead of schedule, after he suffered his injury, he wasn’t expected to be seen until 2025 but here he is back and rehabbing, at Worcester in three games he’s hitting .182 with a .455 OPS; he has a double, and a run scored.
