The Boston Red Sox made several key roster adjustments this afternoon as they continue to navigate injuries and optimize their pitching staff. These roster moves could have a significant impact on the team’s bullpen depth moving forward.

Chris Murphy Reinstated from Injured List

On a positive note, the Red Sox reinstated left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy from the injured list. Murphy underwent Tommy John surgery in April of 2024. His return brings much-needed balance to the bullpen, especially with multiple right-handers currently unavailable. Murphy’s ability to pitch in both long relief and high-leverage situations makes him a valuable asset down the stretch. He also provides another left-handed option out of the bullpen for Alex Cora.

Luis Guerrero Heads to 15-Day IL

However, not all news is positive. The team placed right-handed pitcher Luis Guerrero on the 15-day injured list due to a right elbow strain. Guerrero has been an emerging arm out of the bullpen this season, showing promise with his high-velocity fastball and improving control. His absence will be felt, particularly in late-inning matchups where he’s often relied upon to shut down opposing hitters.

Justin Slaten Transferred to 60-Day IL

In a corresponding move, the Red Sox transferred right-hander Justin Slaten to the 60-day injured list. This shift opens up a roster spot but also signals that Slaten’s recovery will be more long-term. Slaten had shown flashes of potential in limited appearances and was considered a depth piece with upside for the future.

What These Moves Mean for the Red Sox

As a result of these moves, the bullpen will undergo yet another reshuffle. The return of Chris Murphy provides an immediate boost. Fans can expect additional minor-league call-ups or potential acquisitions if the injuries persist.

Going forward, Boston’s pitching depth will be tested. But with Murphy back and management actively addressing needs, the team remains competitive in a tight AL East race.
