Red Sox Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Boston Red Sox enter today riding a three-game winning streak having won two against the Chicago Cubs to end their series and then last night they picked up a 4-0 win over the San Francisco Giants to start their three-game series behind five shutout innings from Cooper Criswell and three-hit games from Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu. Abreu had a double and a triple with an RBI, Duran also drove in a run and stole a base; Rob Refsnyder also drove in the other two runs for the Red Sox. Tonight the Red Sox will have Kutter Crawford on the bump with his 1.35 ERA which is the best in the American League, the Giants haven’t announced a starter for tonight’s game. Yesterday the Red Sox acquired LHP Bailey Horn from the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations. Today they acquired infielder Zack Short from the New York Mets for cash considerations, and they also signed first baseman Dominic Smith after his release from the Tampa Bay Rays.

Red Sox Moves By The Numbers

LHP – Bailey Horn

Horn was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft. He would later end up with the Cubs organization before being traded back to the White Sox on February 27th for RHP Matthew Thompson. In 2023 with the Cubs, he played at Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa appearing in 45 games going 7-3 with a 4.21 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP, and 78 strikeouts in 62 innings. In spring training between the Cubs and White Sox he appeared in six games, not recording a decision, he had a 1.29 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and eight strikeouts in seven innings. He was assigned to Triple-A Charlotte for the White Sox to start the season going 1-1 with an 11.32 ERA, a 2.32 WHIP, and 15 strikeouts in 10.1 innings. He has been assigned to Triple-A Worcester for the Red Sox.

INF – Zack Short

Short was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 17th round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He would be traded by the Cubs to the Detroit Tigers on August 31, 2020, for Cameron Maybin. He made his big league debut for the Tigers in 2021 hitting .141 with a .521 OPS; he had four doubles, six home runs, 20 RBI, 21 runs scored, two stolen bases, and 22 walks in 61 games. In 2022 he played in only six games and didn’t record a hit while walking twice and scoring two runs. In 2023 he played in 110 games hitting .204 with a .631 OPS; he had nine doubles, seven home runs, 33 RBI, 17 runs scored, five stolen bases, and 28 walks. Short was claimed off waivers by the Mets on November 6, 2023. This spring in 18 games with the Mets, he hit .300 with a .879 OPS; he had four doubles, one home run, eight RBI, eight runs scored, three stolen bases, and seven walks, leading to him making the team out of camp. He played in ten games only picking up one hit in nine at bats, he walked twice and scored two runs. He was designated for assignment on April 26th which led to the Red Sox acquiring him. It has not been announced whether he will be with the Red Sox or in Triple-A Worcester which is the likely choice.

1B/OF – Dominic Smith

Smith was drafted by the New York Mets with the 11th overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. He was signed by the Washington Nationals on January 4, 2023, then he signed with the Chicago Cubs on February 23, 2024, and would be released on March 24th before signing with the Tampa Bay Rays on April 1st. Last season with the Nationals he hit .254 with a .692 OPS; he had 21 doubles, a triple, 12 home runs, 46 RBI, 57 runs scored, one stolen base, and 47 walks. This spring with the Cubs he hit .346 with a .909 OPS in nine games; he had two doubles, one home run, three RBI, and three runs scored. He was playing in Triple-A Durham to start 2024 hitting .263 with a .712 OPS; he had three doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, ten runs scored, one stolen base, and eight walks. Now he joins a Red Sox lineup that has lost Triston Casas for a few months and last night newly acquired Garrett Cooper left the game after being hit by a pitch so Smith will provide some depth at first base when Cooper also returns.
