The Boston Red Sox signed a pitcher today as they added Lucas Giolito to a two-year, $38.5 million contract. Giolito will join a staff including Brayan Bello, Chris Sale, Nick Pivetta, and Kutter Crawford. With the current state of the roster, this seems like it’s only the beginning and time for the Red Sox to be active.
Lucas Giolito By The Numbers
Giolito was drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2012. He made his debut in 2016, making six appearances for them, with four being starts going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA, an 8.21 FIP, a 1.78 WHIP, a 3.0 HR/9, a 5.1 BB/9, and a 4.6 K/9. He was traded to the Chicago White Sox following the 2016 season, where he spent seven seasons, and he made 162 starts, going 59-52 with a 4.20 ERA, a 4.19 FIP, a 1.22 WHIP, a 1.3 HR/9, a 3.3 BB/9, and a 9.6 K/9. In 2034, he spent time with three teams pitching for the White Sox, Cleveland Guardians, and Los Angeles Angels. He combined to make 33 starts, going 8-15 with a 4.88 ERA, a 5.27 FIP, a 1.31 WHIP, a 2.0 HR/9, a 3.6 BB/9, and a 10.0 K/9. For his career, he is 61-62 with a 4.43 ERA and 1,077 strikeouts in 1,013.2 innings pitched; he was an all-star in 2019 and finished in the top ten Cy Young voting twice. The goal is that, hopefully, Andrew Bailey can get him back to his old ways, and he can be a solid piece to the Red Sox rotation for the next two seasons.
