The first move of the Craig Breslow era is here as the Red Sox have traded INF Luis Urias to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for RHP Isaiah Campbell from the Mariners.
Roster Moves By The Numbers
Luis Urias
Urias had been with the Brewers for four years but was traded to the Red Sox at the deadline; since joining the Red Sox, he slashed .255/.361/.337 with a .698 OPS; he had four doubles, two home runs, 13 RBI, 13 runs scored, and 14 walks. Defensively, he primarily played second base with the Red Sox, playing 28 games there, and he had a fielding percentage of .979 as he committed only two errors in 96 chances.
Isaiah Campbell
The Mariners drafted Campbell in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He made his professional debut in the Seattle system in 2021 when he appeared in High-A. In 2022, he played at High-A and Double-A, going 1-4 with a 1.57 ERA. In 2023, he played at Double-A, making 23 appearances, going 6-0 with a 2.62 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, a 0.8 HR/9, a 2.6 BB/9, and a 10.1 K/9. He also made his MLB debut with the Mariners this season; in 27 games, he went 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA, a 3.32 FIP, a 1.22 WHIP, a 0.6 HR/9, a 4.1 BB/9, and a 19.4 K/9.
Bottom Line:
This is an interesting move and may signify something coming for the Red Sox as they traded away the player likely to see a lot of time at second base in 2024. Boston still does have Emanuel Valdez but has been rumored to be interested in Whit Merrifield, who makes the most sense for them to add. Still, there is a report that they are also in on Jonathan India, who was made available for trade by the Cincinnati Reds. This trade will undoubtedly lead to speculation as to what’s to come for the Red Sox over the coming weeks.
