Boston Red Sox Roster Moves 11/11

Red Sox Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Boston Red Sox have started their offseason moves by making a minor move and adding some organization depth with the reported signing of Outfielder Mark Contreras from the Minnesota Twins. He is signed to a minor league deal.

Mark Contreras Career By The Numbers

Conteras was drafted in the ninth round of the MLB draft in 2017 by the Minnesota Twins out of the University of California Riverside. In College, he slashed .319/.388/.433 with a .821 OPS; he had 35 doubles, ten triples, three home runs, 71 RBI, 86 runs scored, 25 stolen bases, and 51 walks. In his first full season in the Twins organization, which was 2018, he played across two levels with Single-A and High-A; he slashed .228/.314/.375 with a .689 OPS; he had 18 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, 44 RBI, 64 runs scored, 13 stolen bases, and 37 walks. In 2019, he once again played across two levels with High-A and Double-A; with Double-A, he played in 85 games and slashed .210/.279/.381 with a .660 OPS; he had 12 doubles, three triples, ten home runs, 33 RBI, 35 runs scored, nine stolen bases, and 23 walks. In 2021, he advanced to Triple-A, playing in 95 games. In 2022, he finally got the call and made his big league debut for the Twins, and he would play in 28 games, slashing .121/.148/.293 with a .441 OPS; he had one double, three home runs, and six RBI, nine runs scored, one stolen base, and one walk. In 2023, he played for Triple-A and slashed .274/.352/.418 with a .769 OPS; he had 17 doubles, one triple, ten home runs, 54 RBI, 52 runs scored, 23 stolen bases, and 36 walks.

Bottom Line:

The last big signing the Red Sox had from the Twins was David Ortiz, who slashed .266/.348/.461 with a .809 OPS; he had 108 doubles, three triples, 58 home runs, 238 RBI, 215 runs scored, four stolen bases, and 186 walks in 455 games. Contreras will not be Ortiz, but the Red Sox see something to sign him to a minor league deal to add some outfield depth to the organization. It’ll be interesting to see what they can turn him into.
