The Red Sox offseason is in full swing, and the search for a new GM continues, with the speculation being no one wants the job because they want to bring in their own guys. Some more positive news for the Red Sox: this past week, the top hitter and pitcher prospects for all 30 MLB teams from this season were announced, and for the Red Sox, it is Outfielder Wilyer Abreu and RHP Wikelman Gonzalez.
Prospects By The Numbers
Wilyer Abreu
Abreu, who the Red Sox acquired in the Christian Vazquez with the Houston Astros. Abreu is the Red Sox’s 17th-ranked prospect, and this season, he played with Triple-A Worcester and even the Red Sox. In Triple-A, he played in 86 games and slashed .274/.391/.538 with a .930 OPS; he had 11 doubles, one triple, 22 home runs, 65 RBI, 67 runs scored, eight stolen bases, and 59 walks. With the Red Sox, he appeared in 28 games with a slash line of .316/.388/.474 with a .862 OPS; he had six doubles, two home runs, 14 RBI, ten runs scored, three stolen bases, and nine walks. The season Abreu had this year has caused a log jam in the outfield and may lead to some moves being made this offseason.
Wikelman Gonzalez
Gonzalez was signed by the Red Sox in 2018. Gonzalez is the Red Sox’s ninth-ranked prospect and is working his way up the Red Sox system this season, having played for their High-A and Double-A affiliates. He made 25 starts, going 9-4 with a 3.96 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP, a 0.6 HR/9, a 5.7 BB/9, and a 13.6 K/9. He made 15 starts with High-A, going 6-3 with a 5.14 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, a 0.7 HR/9, a 6.0 BB/9, and a 15.0 K/9. He made ten starts with Double-A Portland, going 3-1 with a 2.42 ERA, a 0.4 HR/9, a 5.2 BB/9, and an 11.7 K/9. Gonzalez seemed to get better across the Red Sox in the future.
