Austin Gomber – LHP

The Rockies have sent Austin Gomber on a rehab assignment to pitch for the Albuquerque Isotopes today. Gomber made 30 starts last year for the Rockies. He had a losing record with 12 losses and only five wins last year. He pitched in 165 innings with 116 strikeouts, a 4.75 ERA, and a 1.31 WHIP.

Over his career, Gomber has made 112 starts in 156 appearances. He has a career record of 35 wins and 40 losses. In 648 innings pitched, he has struck out 505 batters, while walking 203. He has a career 4.86 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Gomber has been on the injured list since March 24th with left shoulder soreness. The Rockies are already sending him on a rehab assignment, which is a good sign for the Rockies. Gomber should slide into the rotation as the number-five starter once his 15 days are up. This is true as long as he does not suffer any setbacks.

Summary

The Rockies are in a tough National League West division and in the middle of a rebuild. Getting the veteran left-handed back in the mix will help. Austin Gomber’s return could be, if all goes well, April 9th. Rockies fans might see him return during the Milwaukee Brewers series at home. Alternatively, he could travel with the team and make his season debut on the road against the San Diego Padres.
