The 2024 MLB Season isn’t even 24 hours over yet and we already have a trade to kick off the offseason, the Atlanta Braves who were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs have traded outfielder/designated hitter Jorge Soler to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for Griffin Canning.
Jorge Soler
Soler just finished his 11th big league season, he is a .243 career hitter with a .794 career OPS; he has 197 doubles, four triples, 191 home runs, 516 RBI, 500 runs scored, 12 stolen bases, and 433 walks. This past season he played for the San Francisco Giants and Braves hitting .241 with a .780 OPS; he had 34 doubles, a triple, 21 home runs, 64 RBI, 84 runs scored, a stolen base, and 68 walks. He helped lead the Braves to their World Series title in 2021 taking home MVP honors. He was an All-Star in 2023.
Griffin Canning
Canning wrapped up his fifth big league season making 99 career appearances with 94 of those coming as starts going 25-34 with a 4.78 ERA, a 4.78 FIP, a 1.33 WHIP, a 1.6 HR/9, a 3.2 BB/9, and an 8.6 K/9 in 508 innings. This season he made 32 appearances with 31 of those coming as starts going 6-13 with a 5.19 ERA, a 5.26 FIP, a 1.40 WHIP, a 1.6 HR/9, a 3.5 BB/9, and a 6.8 K/9 in 171.2 innings. He was a Gold Glove Award winner in 2020.
Wrap Up
This trade between the two teams likely means that the Braves will be letting Max Fried walk this offseason as he is a free agent or they are looking to build up their rotation and have an expendable piece in which they may move Ronal Acuna Jr. to designated hitter in 2025. The offseason has just begun it looks like it’ll be eventful.
