The first moves of the 2024 offseason has taken place finally and its between the Chicago White Sox and the Atlanta Braves

By The Numbers

Mike Soroka

Soroka returned this year and made seven appearances, with six of those coming as starts; he went 2-2 with a 6.40 ERA, a 6.56 FIP, a 1.48 WHIP, a 2.5 HR/9, a 3.3 BB/9, and an 8.1 K/9. For his career, he has made 44 appearances, with 43 of those coming as starts; he is 17-8 with a 3.32 ERA, a 3.82 FIP, a 1.20 WHIP, a 0.9 HR/9, a 2.4 BB/9, and an 8.1 K/9.

Jared Shuster

Shuster made his MLB debut this season, making 11 starts, going 4-3 with a 5.81 ERA, a 5.38 FIP, a 1.50 WHIP, a 1.2 HR/9, a 4.4 BB/9, and a 5.1 K/9.

Braden Shewmake

Shewmake also made his MLB debut this season, appearing in two games, and he didn’t reach base. In the minors in 2023 he played for Triple-A and slashed .234/.298/.407 with a .706 OPS; he had 28 doubles, three triples, 16 home runs, 69 RBI, 79 runs scored, 27 stolen bases, and 39 walks.

Nicky Lopez

The Braves acquired Lopez at the deadline, slashing .277/.333/.369 with a .703 OPS; he had three doubles, one home run, 12 RBI, 13 runs scored, two stolen bases, and five walks. In his career, he has slashed .249/.312/.319 with a .630 OPS; he has 71 doubles, 15 triples, six home runs, 131 RBI, 220 runs scored, 42 stolen bases, and 140 walks.

Riley Gowens 

Gowens, in his first season of professional baseball, made five appearances, with three of those being starts across Single-A and Rookie Ball; he went 1-0 with a 1.15 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, a 0.0 HR/9, a 3.4 BB/9, and a 12.6 K/9.

Aaron Bummer

Bummer just wrapped up his seventh season, and in his career, he has made 289 appearances, going 14-15 with a 3.84 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, a 0.6 HR/9, a 4.3 BB/9, and a 10.2 K/9. This season, he made 61 appearances, going 5-5 with a 6.79 ERA, a 3.58 FIP, a 1.52 WHIP, a 0.6 HR/9, a 5.6 BB/9, and a 12.0 K/9. 

Bottom Line:

This is an interesting trade to kick things off, and the Braves gave up a lot to acquire just a relief pitcher, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens for Atlanta in the long run.
