Two Boston Red Sox Prospects Named Player of the Week for 7/30-8/4

Last week, the Boston Red Sox minor league affiliates combined to go 16-8 and outscored their opponents by a combined 152-138. The Triple-A affiliate the Worcester Red Sox split their series 3-3 and were outscored 44-39. The Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, High-A Greenville Drive, and Single-A Salem Red Sox all won their series. Portland went 5-1 and outscored their opponent 37-26, Greenville went 4-2 and outscored their opponent 53-39, and Salem also went 4-2 but were outscored 29-23.  Two prospects had fantastic weeks that earned them Player of the Week honors both were in Greenville playing in the South Atlantic League. The Hitter of the Week was Mikey Romero and the Pitcher of the Week was Yordanny Monegro. Romero played in five games going 12-25 (he had at least two hits in every game), two doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI, five runs scored, and one walk. This season he is hitting .289 with a .866 OPS with ten doubles, 37 RBI, 39 runs scored, and one stolen base; at Greenville, he’s played in 50 games hitting .281 with a .858 OPS; he has 18 doubles, four triples, ten home runs, 36 RBI, 36 runs scored, 12 walks, and one stolen base. Monegro got the ball on Thursday picking up the win going five shutout innings, he didn’t allow a hit, a run, or a walk; he hit a batter and struck out six. This season he’s made 13 appearances with 12 of those coming as starts going 3-2 with a 3.88 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and 61 strikeouts in 51 innings.

Mikey Romero Career

Romero was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, CA. In his first season, he played for the Red Sox rookie league team and Single-A Salem in 19 games he hit .304 with a .874 OPS; he had seven doubles, three triples, one home run, 17 RBI, 11 runs scored, two stolen bases, and eight walks. Last season he played in rookie ball, Single-A Salem, and High-A Greenville playing in 34 games hitting .214 with a .579 OPS; he had five doubles, two triples, 13 RBI, 15 runs scored, two stolen bases, and 14 walks.

Yordanny Monegro Career

Monegro was signed as an international free agent. He made his first appearance with the Red Sox in 2021 making 13 starts in the Dominican Summer League going 0-1 with a 3.63 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP, a 5.7 BB/9, and a 9.3 K/9 in 39.2 innings. In 2022 he pitched for the Red Sox rookie league team making nine appearances with six of those coming as starts going 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA, a 1.87 WHIP, a 4.9 BB/9, and an 8.4 K/9 in 25.2 innings. Last season he pitched at rookie ball again, Single-A Salem, and High-A Greenville making 14 appearances with 13 of those coming as starts going 6-3 with a 2.06 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, a 3.6 BB/9, and a 12.7 K/9 in 65.2 innings.
