The Texas Rangers are in the midst of a run to an American League pennant, already leading their series with the Houston Astros in the ALCS 1-0 thanks to a dominant performance by Justin Montgomery last night. During the week last week, MLB released their hitter and pitcher prospects of the year for all 30 MLB teams, and the Rangers prospects named were First Baseman Abimelec Ortiz and RHP Jose Corniell.

Prospects By The Numbers

Abimelec Ortiz

Ortiz joined the Rangers system when he was signed as a Free Agent in 2021. He played for High-A and Single-A, combined to play in 109 games and slashed .294/.371/.619 with a .990 OPS; he had 20 doubles, four triples, 33 home runs, 101 RBI, 78 runs scored, one stolen base, and 49 walks. At High-A, he played in 80 games and slashed .290/.363/.624 with a .988 OPS; he had 13 doubles, three triples, 26 home runs, 81 RBI, 59 runs scored, one stolen base, and 33 walks. In Single-A, he played 29 games and slashed .307/.392/.604 with a .996 OPS; he had seven doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 20 RBI, 19 runs scored, and 16 walks.

Jose Corniell

Corniell is a 20-year-old righty who joined the Rangers system in 2020 after he was traded by the Seattle Mariners, who signed him in 2019 to a minor league contract in exchange for Rafael Montero and a player to be named later. This season, Corniell pitched in High-A and Single-A, combining to make 23 appearances and 17 starts; he went 8-3 with a 2.92 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, a 1.0 HR/9, a 2.7 BB/9, and a 10.5 K/9. With Single-A, he made ten appearances and six starts, going 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, a 0.8 HR/9, a 2.9 BB/9, and an 11.6 K/9. In High-A this season, he made 13 appearances and 11 starts, going 4-2 with a 3.09 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, a 1.1 HR/9, a 2.6 BB/9, and a 9.7 K/9.
