Texas Rangers & Detroit Tigers Agree to Trade

Series Preview: Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers with Probable Pitchers 7/18-7/20

It has been a quiet few weeks on the trade market for the defending World Series Champions, but General Manager Chris Young is now making moves with the deadline only two days away. Ken Rosenthal was the first to break the news on X that the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers had agreed on a deal that would send veteran catcher Carson Kelly to Arlington and right-handed pitcher Tyler Owens and catcher Liam Hicks to Detroit. Kelly fills the final spot in the 40-man roster and will be activated upon his arrival.

C Carson Kelly

He was drafted by the St Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft. Kelly made his MLB Debut on September 5th, 2016, with the St Louis Cardinals against the Pittsburg Pirates. He has a slash line of .224/.309/.376 with 333 hits, 179 runs, 66 doubles, two triples, 52 home runs, 199 RBIs, three stolen bases, 166 walks, and 352 strikeouts across his nine-year MLB career. The Arizona Diamondbacks released Kelly in August 2023 and then picked up by the Detroit Tigers as a free agent days later. In the 2024 season, Kelly has made 59 appearances with the Tigers and has recorded 43 hits, 21 runs, four doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 29 RBIs, 17 walks, and 39 strikeouts with a slash line of .242/.327/.393.

RHP Tyler Owens

He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 13th round of the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft and has not yet made his MLB Debut. In his five seasons in the Atlanta and Texas farm systems, he has a W/L record of 7-15 and an ERA of 4.10. He has made 32 starts and finished 33 games and has garnered 17 saves. He has given up 206 hits, 116 runs, 93 earned runs, 17 home runs, 77 walks, and 218 strikeouts across 204.1 innings of work.

C Liam Hicks

He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 9th round of the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft and has not yet made his MLB Debut. In his four seasons in the Rangers’ farm system, he has slashed a .275/.403/.374 and has 210 hits, 111 runs, 39 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 112 RBIs, 13 stolen bases, 143 walks, and 133 strikeouts across 232 games.
