Probable Starters:

Game 1: Luis Severino (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Logan Gilbert (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Gilbert takes the ball for the Seattle Mariners on opening day. The two sides will kick off the season against a division rival. Last year, in 33 starts, Gilbert was 9-12 with a 3.23 ERA, a 3.27 FIP to go along with his phenomenal 0.887 WHIP. Severino started 31 games in 2024. He was 11-7 with a 3.91 ERA, 4.21 FIP, and 1.242 WHIP for the Mets.

Game 2: Jeffrey Springs (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Luis Castillo (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Springs, who, like Severino, is in his first year with the Athletics. Last year, in seven games, he was 2-2 with a 3.27 ERA, 3.98 FIP, and a 1.36 WHIP. Across the diamond, Castillo will start for the Mariners. He’ll have something to prove after an injury-riddled season. In 30 starts, he went 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA, 3.91 FIP, and a 1.16 WHIP.

Game 3: Osvaldo Bido (0-0, 0.00 ERA) Vs. Bryce Miller (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Bido has worked as both a starter and a reliever in the past. Last season, he pitched in 16 games, nine of which he started. In that stretch, he posted a 5-3 record with a 3.41 ERA, a 3.36 FIP, and a 1.089 WHIP. The Mariners will turn to a rising star in their rotation, Bryce Miller. The 26-year-old righty is coming off a successful campaign in 2024 in which he started 31 games and pitched to a 2.94 ERA, a 3.58 FIP, and a 0.976 WHIP.

Game 4: JP Sears (0-0, 0.00 ERA) Vs. Bryan Woo (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Sears has gotten incrementally better since coming to the Athletics mid-season in 2022. Last season, he posted an 11-13 record in 32 starts, while also recording a 4.38 ERA, a 4.71 FIP, and a 1.223 WHIP. Woo is coming off of his most successful season, although he was also hit with the injury bug multiple times last year. In 22 starts, he posted a 2.89 ERA, a 3.40 FIP, and a 0.898 WHIP.

Players To Watch:

Seattle Mariners

This could be the season that Julio Rodriguez puts it all together. He struggled a little bit last year, as did almost everyone in the Mariners lineup, but with a new approach on the offensive side, Julio looks more comfortable. Or at least he did this spring. The Mariners will need Rodriguez to be the star they’re paying him to be if they want to make a deep run at the playoffs. In 3 years, Julio has hit .277/.334/.467 with an average OPS+ of 130. In that span, he has scored 262 runs, hit 79 doubles, five triples, and 80 Home Runs. He has 246 RBIs and 88 stolen bases.

Athletics

Top Prospect Jacob Wilson made the roster out of spring training and will likely start at shortstop for the Athletica. At 22 years old, he has nothing left to prove in the minors and caught his first glimpse of big league action last year. Wilson slashed .250/.314/.315 with the Athletics last season. Whether or not he’ll improve on that will be interesting to watch.

Trade Deadline Strategy Reassessed Amid Judge’s Injury

Aaron Judge’s injury has cast uncertainty over the Yankees’ postseason push, but it hasn’t derailed their trade deadline strategy. With Judge expected to return soon as a designated hitter, the front office remains focused on acquiring controllable pitching and versatile depth rather than making reactionary moves or sacrificing long-term value.
