The Miami Marlins suffered a loss last night to the Los Angeles Angels 7-4 and fell to 0-5 to start the season. Max Meyer made his big league debut going five innings giving up two runs on two hits; he walked two and struck out four. Today the Marlins will take on the Angels for the second game of their three-game series and the Marlins will have Jesus Luzardo on the mound making his second start of the season, in his first start against the Pirates he went five innings giving up two runs on two hits; he walked two and struck out eight. Luzardo is facing Tyler Anderson who is making his first start of the 2024 season. Before today’s game, the Marlins made a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks as they acquired infielder Emmanuel Rivera in exchange for cash. With the move the Marlins designated their eighth-ranked prospect by ITD shortstop Jacob Amaya, to make room on the 40-man roster for Rivera.

Roster Moves By The Numbers

Emmanuel Rivera

Rivera was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 19th round of the 2015 MLB draft. He made his big-league debut with the Royals on June 28, 2021, against the Boston Red Sox going 2-4. He finished that season hitting .256 with a .650 OPS; he had four doubles, one home run, five RBI, 13 runs scored, two stolen bases, and eight walks. He finished his tenure with the Royals playing in 92 games and he hit .243 with a .673 OPS; he had 12 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 27 RBI, 37 runs scored, two stolen bases, and 19 walks. He was traded by the Royals to the Diamondbacks on August 1, 2022, for RHP Luke Weaver. With Arizona he played in 125 games and hit .249 with a .691 OPS; he had 21 doubles, ten home runs, 47 RBI, 54 runs scored, two stolen bases, and 34 walks. Last season in 86 games in Arizona he hit .261 with a .672 OPS; he had 13 doubles, four home runs, 29 RBI, 32 runs scored, one stolen base, and 22 walks. In the postseason he hit .235 with a .572 OPS in 13 games. He has been assigned to Triple-A Jacksonville for the Marlins.

Jacob Amaya

Amaya was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2017 draft. The Marlins acquired Amaya on January 11, 2023, for shortstop Miguel Rojas. The plan was for him to be the shortstop of the future, but it just hasn’t panned out. Last season at Triple-A Jacksonville he played in 128 games, and he hit .252 with a .407 OPS; he had 26 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 65 RBI, 85 runs scored, six stolen bases, and 70 walks. He made his big league debut with the Marlins last season and in four games he went 2-9 with two RBI, a run scored, and one stolen base. In 2024 with Triple-A Jacksonville he had played in three games and he went 2-11 with two RBI.
