Cardinals vs. Tigers

First Three: Tigers Score Early

The Tigers would threaten in the bottom of the second as Parker Meadows got a two-out single and Spencer Torkelson walked, but Kyle Leahy got out of the jam. Keider Montero got through the first three innings, allowing just one base runner, which was a Jordan Walker leadoff single in the second. The Tigers got on the board first in the bottom of the third. Colt Keith led off with a single, then Leahy got two quick outs before Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run home run, his second of the season. That made it 2-0.

Middle Three: Cardinals Take Control

The Tigers got a one-out double from Torkelson, who even got him to third, but couldn’t bring him home in the fourth. The Cardinals got on the board in the fifth as they led off with a Nolan Gorman single and a Thomas Saggese walk. A few batters later, Pedro Pages singles home Gorman to make it 2-1. That would end Montero’s night, going 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Things unraveled for the Tigers when Enmanuel De Jesus came in, on a ground ball back to him, an errant throw skipped past Gleyber Torres, allowing Saggese to score. Pages reached third, and Victor Scott, who hit the ball, reached second. De Jesus got an out, but Ivan Herrera drove in Pages and Scott to give the Cardinals their first lead of the series, 4-2. The Tigers got one back in the bottom half of the sixth after the Cardinals went down in order. Dillon Dingler led off with a walk, Meadows singled, and Dillon Dingler went to third. Meadows stole second. Torkelson walked, and there were still no outs. Javier Baez hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Dingler. The Cardinals somehow managed to escape the jam with the game now at 4-3.

Last Three: Cardinals Win It

Both teams went down in order in the seventh. The eighth saw the Cardinals add to their lead as rookie JJ Wetherholt caused issues, starting the inning with a single, and he got second on an Ivan Herrera walk. Wetherholt got to third on as he tagged up on an Alec Burleson fly out and would score on a Gorman sacrifice fly to make it 5-3. Connor Seabold limited the damage to one run after he entered and issued a walk to load the bases. The Cardinals got a two-out single, but the inning ended with Scott caught stealing. The Tigers went down 1-2-3 in the ninth. The Cardinals had five runs without an extra-base hit.

Player of the Game:

Ivan Herrera. In a game where multiple names could have been chosen from either side. Herrera, being on the winning side and going 1-3, driving in two of the Cardinals’ five runs, gives him the edge.
