The Detroit Tigers had a successful season making it to the postseason and advancing past the Wild Card round with a sweep of the Houston Astros before their dream season came to an end against the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS, a series they lead 2-1 and needed to win just one more game to advance to the ALCS, they would drop game four and game five. The Tigers did all of that behind a lineup full of young pieces and one solidified starting pitcher in left-hander Tarik Skubal and tonight Skubal was awarded for his success as he was unanimously named the American League Cy Young Award winner for the 2024 season. The other finalists were reliever Emmanuel Clase and lefty Seth Lugo
The 6-3, 240lb Hayward, CA native made 31 starts this season going 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA, a 2.50 FIP, a 0.92 WHIP, and 228 strikeouts in 192 innings. He allowed only 142 hits, 35 walks, and 15 home runs. He had a 170 ERA+ and finished as a 6.3 WAR. He took home the triple crown for the American League finishing in first in wins, strikeouts, and ERA.
Although the award doesn’t include postseason stats, he made three starts going 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA, a 0.79 WHIP, and 20 strikeouts in 19 innings. His lone loss came in game five of the ALDS as he gave up five runs in six innings on six hits; he walked one and struck out six.
