Cleveland Guardians Weekly Recap

This past week has been action-packed for the Cleveland Guardians. From snapping their win streak to scoring the most runs in a game this season, last week was anything but boring.

Series 1 – Cleveland Guardians vs Colorado Rockies

On Monday, May 27, the Guardians started their series against the Colorado Rockies. Before this game, Cleveland had swept three series for nine wins against the Minnesota Twins, the New York Mets, and the Los Angeles Angels. This game proved tough for the Guardians as they lost 4-8. Tyler Freeman was once again leading the lineup due to Steven Kwan being out of the lineup. Freeman had the most hits of the Guardians in that game with three and the most runs with two.

Cleveland came out strong in the second game to win 13-7. The Rockies tied the game in the sixth inning 7-7 but the Guardians bounced back with three runs in each of the next two innings. Josh Naylor hit two home runs, and José Ramírez and David Fry each had one home run. Triston McKenzie started the game for Cleveland and struck out nine batters. He also gave up six hits, four runs, and walked three.

The Cleveland Guardians started the scoring in the third game in the first inning with two runs. The Colorado Rockies were quick to answer back with two runs in the bottom of the first. Despite trying as hard as they could the Guardians could not regain any ground after Colorado scored six runs in the second inning. Logan Allen started pitching for Cleveland, gave up all seven of the Rockies’ runs, and only pitched for 1.2 innings.

Series 2 – Cleveland Guardians vs Washington Nationals

On Friday, May 31, The Cleveland Guardians started their series against the Washington Nationals. Cleveland was quick to find its footing after losing the series to Colorado and they were able to win the first game against Washington 7-1. Steven Kwan returned to the lineup and was quick to make an impact with the most hits for the night with three. He also had two runs, was walked once, and batted in an RBI. David Fry once again hit a home run for his eighth of the season. Tanner Bibee started on the mound for Cleveland, retired seven, and gave up three hits and one run. Emmanuel Clase stepped in to close the game and struck out three.

The Guardians secured the series win in the second game when they won 3-2. They started the scoring in the first inning with two quick runs and scored the winning run in the third inning. Washington scored both of their runs in the fourth inning. José Ramírez had two hits and two of the runs. Kyle Manzardo drove in two RBIs, one of those being Josh Naylor who had the other run. Ben Lively was the starting pitcher for Cleveland and pitched for 5.2 innings, striking out four. He gave up five hits, two runs, and walked one. The bullpen was on full rotation as Tim Herrin pitched 0.1 innings, and Scott Barlow, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase pitched one inning each in that order.

The Washington Nationals struck back in the third game to beat the Guardians 2-5. Washington scored four runs in the second inning, and their final in the fourth. Cleveland scored their two runs in the second inning. Will Brennan had the most hits for the Guardians with two. The two runs were scored by Brennan and Gabriel Arias. Daniel Schneeman was responsible for driving in those runs. Carlos Carrasco had the start for Cleveland. He struck out five, walked one, and gave up seven hits and five runs. The bullpen was once again on full display as Sem Hentges pitched two innings and Nick Sandlin, Tim Herrin, and Pedro Avila all pitched one inning each.

Next Up:

The Cleveland Guardians next play on Tuesday, June 4 at 6:40 PM EST against the Kansas City Royals. The Royals are in second place behind the Guardians in the American League Central division. Cleveland is leading Kansas City by five games and they have the chance to increase that to eight games if they sweep the series but there is also the chance it could drop to two games if they get swept.
