The Chicago Cubs finished last year in Second place in the National League Central, eight games behind the Milwaukee Brewers last season, also falling short of their Wild Card bid. One big reason for the late-season miss was missing the first-half dominance from Marcus Stroman, who was fantastic last year for the Cubs. Due to a few injuries, Stroman tailed off at the end of last year, leaving the Cubs relying heavily on Justin Steele’s turn on the bump. So it is no surprise that they have been linked to Pitchers like Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, and Shane Bieber.
SP – Jesus Luzardo
The Marlins Left-handed pitcher is now being reported as a strong link to being heavily targeted by the Chicago Cubs. The Six foot two hundred and eighteen pounds left-hander, last year in 32 starts, went 10-10 with a 3.58 ERA, 178.2 innings, 208 Strikeouts, and a 1.215 WHIP would be a nice fit for the Cubs. The big plus, though is the contract, team control until 2027, and an estimated 5.9 Million dollar salary by Sportrac. The Cubs would have a young arm under control for three years, which, with the salary, is much better than any deal out there for any free agents right now.
What could it Cost?
Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Cubs Top Prospect, would be the first name I would assume to be discussed. Unless Cody Bellinger is signed to a long-term deal, I think it should be a hard no for the Cubs. Pete Crow-Armstrong is seen as the Cubs long-term answer in center field and as a future superstar for the team. So if the Marlins are okay with a package built around other prospects, then a package of 4-5 prospects SS-Matt Shaw, SP-Ben Brown, SP-Jordan Wicks, and maybe UTL Christopher Morel all could be part of the return for linked Luzardo.
Final Thoughts
If the Cubs can land Luzardo to add to Justin Steele and James Taillon atop the Cubs 2024 rotation and resign Cody Bellinger, they could turn this slow offseason into a major hit leading into the new season. Luzardo would be a great addition to the Cubs staff, and keeping Pete Crow-Armstrong would be terrific for the Cubs future as well.
