Boston Red Sox Roster Moves 7/29

Red Sox Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Boston Red Sox have been busy today after trading infielder Nick Yorke to the Pittsburgh Pirates for RHP Quinn Priester this afternoon ahead of their series opener against the Seattle Mariners, a series which is a huge series as the Mariners are now just a half-game behind the Red Sox and are 1.5 games behind the Kansas City Royals for the sixth and final playoff spot; the Red Sox enter tonight a full game behind the Royals. With the Boston bullpen taxed they have called up an arm from Triple-A Worcester in hopes it’ll give them a fresh arm, and the arm is RHP Trey Wingenter. In the corresponding move, the Red Sox have optioned RHP Greg Weissert to Triple-A Worcester.

Red Sox Moves By The Numbers

RHP – Trey Wingenter

The Red Sox acquired Wingenter earlier this year and he appeared in one game going one inning giving up three runs on two hits; he walked one and struck out one. With Worcester, he’s appeared in four games posting a 1.50 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, a 3.0 BB/9, and a 16.5 K/9 in six innings. He’s seemed to figure some things out in Worcester and he’s fresh so hopefully he can provide a much-needed boost to the bullpen for this key series.

RHP – Greg Weissert

Weissert was one of the arms the Red Sox acquired in the Alex Verdugo trade, he’s appeared in 45 games going 2-2 with a 4.24 ERA, a 4.18 FIP, a 1.44 WHIP, a 3.3 BB/9, and a 9.1 K/9 in 46.2 innings. Weissert got off to a hot start in the Red Sox bullpen but hasn’t been that way as of late. In his last five appearances, he’s going 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA, a 1.76 WHIP, and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings. He last pitched yesterday going 1.2 innings giving up two runs, one earned on two hits; he walked two and struck out two, throwing 42 pitches which is likely because the Red Sox knew he was going to be optioned.
