Boston Red Sox News & Notes 7/29

The Boston Red Sox have struggled to start the second half going 2-7 after being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers and then dropping two of three against the Colorado Rockies and the New York Yankees. They’ve been outscored 75-53 in those nine games. It was announced over the weekend that newly acquired James Paxton would start on Tuesday against the team he started his career with the Seattle Mariners. Also, over the weekend they acquired Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays for three prospects and also claimed RHP Yohan Ramirez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. To make room they would designate RHP Chase Anderson and catcher Reese McGuire for assignment. They also announced last night that Triston Casas would be starting his rehab assignment on Tuesday.

LHP – James Paxton

Last season with the Red Sox went 7-5 in 19 starts with a 4.50 ERA, a 4.68 FIP, a 1.31 WHIP, a 3.1 BB/9, and a 9.5 K/9 in 96 innings. This past offseason there were conversations of bringing him back to Boston but he ultimately signed with the Dodgers making 18 starts going 8-2 with a 4.96 FIP, a 1.46 WHIP, a 4.8 BB/9, and a 6.4 K/9 in 89.1 innings. The Dodgers surprisingly designated him for assignment which led to the Red Sox to trade for him.

RHP – Yohan Ramirez

Ramirez is in his fifth season, and he’s been a journeyman having played for seven different teams and the Red Sox will now be his eighth. He’s made 139 appearances going 6-9 with a 4.51 ERA, a 4.82 FIP, a 1.37 WHIP, a 4.6 BB/9, and a 9.2 K/9 in 167.2 innings. This season with three teams he’s appeared in 37 games going 0-5 with a 5.98 ERA, a 4.18 FIP, a 1.44 WHIP, a 3.5 BB/9, and a 9.1 K/9 in 43.2 innings.

RHP – Chase Anderson

Anderson this season has made 27 appearances with one of those coming as a start going 0-2 with a 4.85 ERA, a 5.57 FIP, a 1.25 WHIP, a 3.3 BB/9, and a 6.1 K/9 in 52 innings. He most recently pitched on Saturday going one inning suffering the loss giving up three runs, two earned on two hits; he walked one and failed to record a strikeout.

C – Danny Jansen

Jansen made his Red Sox debut last night and went 2-3, not a bad start. With the Blue Jays in 61 games, he was hitting .212 with a .671 OPS; he had 13 doubles, six home runs, 18 RBI, 27 runs scored, and 25 walks.

C – Reese McGuire

McGuire this season in 52 games is hitting .209 with a .575 OPS; he had three doubles, three home runs, 18 RBI, ten runs scored, three stolen bases, and 13 walks. He had a nice start to the season going 8-24 with a double, two home runs, eight RBI, two runs scored, two walks, and a stolen base in his first nine games. Since that stretch, he’s gone 21-115 with two doubles, one home run, ten RBI, eight runs scored, nine walks, and two stolen bases in 43 games.

1B- Triston Casas

Casas is expected to begin his rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday which could provide a huge spark to the Red Sox offense when he is ready to return. Casas has been out since April 20th with torn rib cartilage. In 22 games this season he was hitting .244 with a .857 OPS; he had three doubles, six home runs, ten RBI, 12 runs scored, and 12 walks.
